Shao.

BORDERLESS—— EASTERN AND WESTERN

EXCELLENT ARTWORKS EXHIBITION BY INTERNATIONALYOUNG ARTISTS

“Borderless”takes a large perspective on life and love that transcends geographicalboundaries. Parallel with the development of mankind over time, itpresents a view of a unified civilization through beauty in the fine arts, which,it is hoped, will override differences in art forms, ideologies, modes ofthought, as well as lifestyles. Borderless—Eastern and Western: An InternationalExhibition of Young Artists is an exhibition of cultural exchange and apresentation of diverse forms of fine art that, in the pursuit of “globalization”,is intended to stand above regions, nations and countries. With a spirit ofindependence and freedom, the exhibition plans to bridge East and West, promoting civilized exchange. It is in this spirit that the exhibition offersinsights into the beauty created not only by established painters, but also bytalented young artists from East and West, without the limitations of time andspace, so that viewers may gain inspiration and power from the exhibition toreconstruct their perspectives. This exhibition adopted a revolutionaryphilosophy of inclusiveness and liberality, and fosters a new atmosphere for anew era by presenting works of contemporary young artists. Here, differentworks resonate, and new ideas come to life.

Cultural exchange and mutual learning have always been the impetus forthe peaceful development of mankind in the course of history. In the 17thcentury, a group of Chinese people built Four Tang Temples in Nagasaki, Japan. All of the four temples feature strong a Chinese aesthetic and architecture.Master Yinyuan and his apprentices brought “Apricot culture” to Japan which hada great influence on Japanese architecture, sculpture, poetry, painting, calligraphy, as well as medicine. During the Edo period, a Qing Dynasty Chinesepainter named Shen Quan (styled Nanping) was invited by the Shogunate. To teachpainting in Nagasaki, he taught Japanese painters new flower and bird sketchingtechniques in combination with the styles of the Northern Song and Mingdynasties. The emergence of “Nanping School” style had a tremendous impact onthe painting and aesthetic concepts during the Edo period. The trend alsoinfluenced a Japanese folk art called "Ukiyo-e." The fusion of therealistic painting skills in Chinese painting and the decorative arts inJapanese painting gave birth to a new style of "Ukiyo-e", whichengendered a school of great Japanese "Ukiyo-e" painters representedby Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Toruhaharu, Utagawa Toyokuni, Utagawa Hiroshige,Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and Keisai Eisen. This school of paintershas important influences in the art history of Japan.

On the other hand, Western art in the 19th century was, to a greatextent, influenced by Japanese "Ukiyo-e." Due to the disparity withWestern classic painting, the unique form of "Ukiyo-e"printmaking--with its Eastern philosophical connotations--affected andtransformed Western impressionist and post-impressionist genres and styles.Impressionist painters such as Monet, Degas, Gauguin and Van Gogh were allnoted by their large-scale applications of the "Ukiyo-e" skills suchas intense colors on the plane, free use of non-central structural composition, lack of perspective, and shadow skills. These painting skills and styles becamethe essential sources of their creativity and expression. In a sense,"Ukiyo-e" affected the transformation and development of the entireWestern modern art.

Russia is located in the intersection of Western and Easterncivilization and cultures. Historically, Russia has taken influences of bothEuropean religion and philosophy as well as Eastern cultures in forming itsunique national characteristics and culture. Since the 1030s, under thespecific historical circumstances, the political and cultural contact betweenRussia and China had been greatly increased. Hence, Soviet or Russian artgreatly influenced the development of Chinese modern art. In the 1950s, Sovietart was generally/comprehensibly introduced into China  as“socialist realism” which had tremendous influence on the creation of a uniquestyle of Chinese art called “revolutionary art”. Master Xu Beihong, whocompleted his art studies in France, also provided affirmation to the Sovietrealism painting. He wrote a preface for the book “History of Soviet Art,”published in 1936 in China. The book made a contribution to the development ofthe school of realism in China.

Since the 1980s, modern and contemporary art in the Western world becamemore closely connected and intertwined with Asian culture. At that time, modernand contemporary art was taking its shape in China. The iconic American art masterssuch as Andrew Wyeth, William De Kooning, Paul Jackson, Andy Warhol, RobertRauschenberg and others greatly influenced not only the birth and developmentof modern art in China but also the artistic creation by young Chinese artists. With China’s reform and open-door policy, reference and integration of Westernculture into Chinese culture helped Chinese artists expand the aesthetic horizon, exploring new landscapes of Chinese contemporary art to forge the newdiversification of art development in China.

BothEastern and Western cultures made and are making significant and imperishablecontribution to the development of world civilizations. Development of culturesand civilization can be realized only in the harmonious progress of humansocieties and overall development of mankind with tolerance to diversecultures of the world. Young artists are the futuristic force driving the ceaselessflourish of art. Throughout history, it’s common in both East and West thatmasterpieces were created by artists in their youth, and masters reached theapex of their artistic career in juvenescence. For example, Michelangelo andRaphael, two of the so-called "Big Three of the High Renaissance,"completed the world-renowned masterpieces David and The Schoolof Athens before the age of 30. Van Gogh in the Netherlands, Seurat inFrance, Schiele in Austria, Modigliani in Italy, Pollock in the United Statesand Ximeng Wang in ancient China, all achieved exceptional achievements intheir youth. Ergo the theme of “Exhibition of Excellent Works fromInternational Young Artists” was set to be “Borderless-East and West”, buildingon the history of communication and collision between Eastern and WesternCultures. In this exhibition, we earnestly seek to build a platform for internationaldiscourse and cutting-edge explorations, present the colorful andmulti-dimensional nature of modern International youth art, and there-foreboost the growth and advancement of young artists globally.

This exhibition is co-sponsored and co-hosted by the Rodin Internationalartist Foundation f The United States and Drexel University, Westphal Collegeof Media and Design. We appreciate those internationally renowned artists whoparticipate in the exhibition for sowing friendship in the land of art to advocatepeace, introduce cultures and promote harmonious coexistence of differentcultures in the world. Due to the Covid-10 pandemic, this exhibition will beheld online first. An offline exhibition will be prepared at an appropriatetime after the pandemic. he exhibition features more than 100 works by 45international artists.
